Current Status and Outlook

Typhoon TEMBIN (VINTA) has been upgraded from a Severe Tropical Storm (STS)  after traversing the southern tip of Palawan and is already outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Its circulation has left Palawan and is just affecting the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) located over the Spratlys.  Improving weather along these islands will be expected through the next 24 hours.

*This is the Final Update on this tropical cyclone.

24-hr Outlook: TY TEMBIN (VINTA) is expected to move west to west-northwest at a forward speed of 20 km/hr, approaching the shoreline of Southern Vietnam tomorrow morning, Christmas Day (Dec 25). The typhoon will start to slowly weaken for the next 24 hours.

The outer rainbands of TY TEMBIN (VINTA) will continue to bring moderate to at times heavy/extreme rains and thunderstorms across the Kalayaan Island Group today.

Where is TEMBIN (VINTA)?As of 11:00 AM PhT today, December 24…0300 GMT. The cloud-filled eye was located over the southern part of the South China Sea (near 8.2N 113.5E), about 613 km west-southwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan or 808 km east-southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Severe Tropical Storm TEMBIN (VINTA) has slightly intensified as it moves westward at an accelerated speed of 37 km/hr over the southwestern coast of Balabac, Palawan. Its rainbands are currently affecting Palawan and Kalayaan Island Group. 

24-hr Outlook: STS TEMBIN (VINTA) is expected to intensify into a Typhoon (TY) as it exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Sunday morning (Dec 24) between 8-9 am. It will continue to move west-northwestward over the West Philippine Sea at a forward speed of 24 km/hr.

STS TEMBIN (VINTA) will continue to bring moderate to at times heavy/extreme rains and thunderstorms across Palawan and Kalayaan Island Group.

Severe Tropical Storm TEMBIN (VINTA) has maintained its intensity as it moves westward across the southwestern part of the Sulu Sea. It is expected to intensify into a Typhoon (TY) before its landfall over the Southernmost part of Palawan by Sunday early morning (Dec 24) between 1-2 am. Residents are advised to take all necessary precautions for possible flash floods, landslides, lightning strikes, strong winds, and storm surge.

24-hr Outlook: STS TEMBIN (VINTA) is expected to intensify into a Typhoon (TY) before it passes over the Southernmost part of Palawan by Sunday early morning (Dec 24). It will continue moving westward at a forward speed of 25 km/hr over the West Philippine Sea, already outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Current Status and Outlook

TEMBIN (VINTA) regains Severe Tropical Storm (STS) classification as it moves westward across the Sulu Sea, increasing its threat to Southern Palawan. Its western rainbands expected to reach Palawan today.

24-hr Outlook: STS TEMBIN (VINTA) is expected to move generally westward at a forward speed of 20 km/hr and could become a Typhoon later today.  It is forecast to make landfall over the southernmost part of Southern Palawan between 1-2am tomorrow (Sunday, Dec 24), passing over or very close to the Town of Balabac.

Residents along Southern Palawan are advised to take full precautionary measures as Tembin (Vinta) is forecast to make landfall over the area.

The combined effects of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) and STS TEMBIN (VINTA) – will bring moderate to at times heavy/extreme rains and thunderstorms across Eastern Luzon, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Sulu Archipelago, and Western Mindanao..

Current Status and Outlook

Severe Tropical Storm TEMBIN (VINTA) continues to gain strength while moving westward over the warm waters of the Sulu Sea…now endangers Southern Palawan, where deteriorating weather conditions will be expected later tonight.

24-hr Outlook: STS TEMBIN (VINTA) is expected to move generally westward at a forward speed of 23 km/hr and could become a Typhoon later today.  It is forecast to make landfall over the southernmost part of Southern Palawan between 12-1am early tomorrow (Sunday, Dec 24), passing over or very close to the Town of Balabac, before emerging over the West Philippine Sea before noon tomorrow.

Residents along Southern Palawan are advised to take full precautionary measures as Tembin (Vinta) is forecast to make landfall over the area.

The combined effects of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) and STS TEMBIN (VINTA) – will bring moderate to at times heavy/extreme rains and thunderstorms across Eastern Luzon, MIMAROPA, Sulu Archipelago, and Western Mindanao.
