Current Status and Outlook

Typhoon MERANTI (FERDIE) has weakened considerably after interacting with the mountainous terrain of Southern Taiwan and decreased Oceanic Heat Content (OHC)…now outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

The typhoon is forecast to move northwest to north-northwest at 20 kph through the next 24 hours and shall make its final landfall along the shores of Southern Fujian Province of China by early Thursday morning and will rapidly dissipate over land thereafter.

**This will be the Final Update on this Tropical Cyclone.

Where is Meranti (Ferdie)?

As of 5:00 PM PhT today, September 14...0900 GMT. The center was located over the southern part of Taiwan Strait (near 23.0N 119.3E), about 112 km west-northwest of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan or 207 km southwest of Xiamen City, China. 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 215 kph near the center...Gustiness: 270 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving Northwest @ 25 kph, towards Southeastern China.
