Current Status and Outlook

Typhoon MALAKAS (GENER) has maintained its strength as it tracks off Northwest just East-Northeast of Basco, Batanes or near the Easternmost edge of the Bashi Channel. Its westernmost outer feederrainbands are still affecting the far Northeastern side of Batanes Island Group, including the Northernmost parts of the Babuyan Island Group.

However, this Typhoon is forecast to intensify further as it moves parallel to the far East of Taiwan, before bending Polewards and a more North-northeasterly jog while slowing down within the next 24 hours, cruising along the East Sea region.

Malakas shall pass over the Western Yaeyama Island Chain just before Saturday noon (Sep 17)…and immediately moving out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Saturday afternoon.

Where is Malakas(Gener)?

As of 5:00 PM PhT today, September 16...0900 GMT.The cloud-filled eye was located over the western part of the North Philippine Sea (near 21.6 123.7), about 216 km Northeast of Basco, Batanes or 381 km North-northeast of Santa Ana, Cagayan.

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 155 kph near the center...Gustiness: 185 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving West-northwest @ 18 kph, towards the East Taiwan Sea and Western Yaeyama Island Chain.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON: Slows down and starts a Northeastward jog over the East Sea. Its maximum sustained winds starts to weaken…about 426 km Northeast of Taipei, Taiwan [2PM SEP 18: 27.93N 124.38E @ 155kph]. Confidence Level: HIGH.

MONDAY AFTERNOON: Starts to accelerate northeastward across the East Sea region while losing steam and in strength…about 272 km West of Amami-o-shima [2PM SEP 19: 28.71 126.63E @ 130kph].Confidence Level: LOW.
