Current Status and Outlook

Typhoon NESAT (GORIO) has made landfall over Yilan County, Taiwan at around 7:00 to 7:10 PM yesterday (Jul 29). It slightly weakened as it moves west-northwestward during the past 6 hours over the northwestern coast of Taiwan.

The typhoon is expected to move northwest for the next 24 hours at a speed of 18 km/hr and will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by early Sunday morning. It will weaken into a Tropical Storm (TS) as it make its second landfall along Fujian Province, China.

Meanwhile at 11pm yesterday (July 29, 2017), Tropical Storm (TS) HAITANG, remains outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), about 328 km west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (19.5N 117.8E). With maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and is forecast to move northeast at 30 kph towards Eastern Taiwan. This storm will not directly affect any part of the Philippines.

*TY NESAT (GORIO) and TS HAITANG will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and bring occasional rains, gusty wnds and thunderstorms across the Western Sections of Luzon, becoming more frequent along Ilocos Region.  Residents are advised to take precautionary measures against heavy rains which can produce flash floods, landslides and overflowing of some river systems.

Where is NESAT (GORIO)?As of 11:00 PM PhT, July 29…1500 GMT. The eye was located over the northwestern coast of Taiwan (near 24.8N 120.7E), about 91 km west-southwest of Taipei, Taiwan or 204 km east of Quanzhou, China.
