Current Status and OutlookThe far-away Tropical Depression (TD) 26W which developed over Eastern Micronesia over the past 24 hours, has strengthened into a Tropical Storm (TS) and is now known globally as "MANGKHUT" – a Thai word for Mangosteen.  This new storm is currently threatening the Northern Mariana Islands particularly the islands of Guam and Rota.

TS MANGKHUT is forecast to track westward across the northern portions of Central Micronesia within the next 24 hrs and could become a Typhoon by Sunday afternoon (Sept 09).

Where is MANGKHUT?As of 3:00 PM PhT today, September 08…0700 GMT. The center was located over west-eastern part of Micronesia (near 13.8°N 160.5°E), about 1,700 km east of Hagatna, Guam (CNMI) or 4,000 km east of Bicol Region, Philippines
How strong is it?Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 75 kph near the center…Gustiness: 95 kph
Past Movement (06 hrs)Westward @ 30 km/hr, towards Northern Mariana Islands.
Forecast Highlights
  • TS MANGKHUT is still too far away to directly affect any part of the Philippines until Thursday, Sept 13, 2018. 
  • This storm could become a minimal Typhoon (TY) by late Saturday (Sept 09).
  • The Day 2 to 3 Forecast (Sept 10-11) shows MANGKHUT passing over or very close to Guam (CNMI) on Monday evening.
  • The Global Typhoon Models' Day 4 to 5 Forecast (Sept 12-13) shows it entering the eastern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as a Super Typhoon on Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.
  • The Day 7 tp 8 (Sept 15-16), extended forecast shows MANGKHUT approaching and passing along the Batanes-Taiwan Area by late Saturday or Sunday.  The forecast probability is Very Low (0%) and is not yet considered final.
  • The next StormWatch Update will be issued after 24 hours or by Sunday afternoon (Sept 09).
