Current Status and OutlookMANGKHUT is now a Typhoon (TY) as it barrels closer to Guam.  The core is expected to arrive over the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday afternoon (Sept 10), with possible winds of more than 200 km/hr (Category 3 or 4).

TY MANGKHUT is forecast to track generally westward with a slight southerly dip across these islands and shall enter the eastern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday afternoon (Sept 12).  It is then expected to be a Super Typhoon when it reaches the easternmost portion of the Philippine Sea. 

Where is MANGKHUT?As of 3:00 PM PhT today, September 09…0700 GMT. The eye was located over central part of Micronesia (near 15.1°N 152.7°E), about 876 km east-northeast of Hagatna, Guam (CNMI) or 3,076 km east of Bicol Region, Philippines

Forecast Highlights
  • TY MANGKHUT is still too far away to directly affect any part of the Philippines until Thursday, Sept 13, 2018. 
  • It could become a Super Typhoon (STY) by late Wednesday (Sept 12).
  • The Day 1 Forecast (Sept 10) shows MANGKHUT passing over or very close to Guam (CNMI) on Monday afternoon.
  • The Global Typhoon Models' Day 3 Forecast (Sept 12) shows it entering the eastern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday afternoon.
  • The Day 6 (Sept 15), extended forecast shows MANGKHUT traversing the Balintang Channel, passing over or very close to the Babuyan-Batanes Islands Area on or before Saturday afternoon.  The forecast confidence of Day 6 is Very Low (<10%) and is not yet considered final. It is highly recommended to check the succeeding updates every now and then for the latest forecast projection.
  • The next StormWatch Update will be issued after 24 hours or by Monday afternoon (Sept 10).
