Typhoon HALONG (JOSE) has slightly gained strength as it continues on its north-northeast crawl towards Southern Japan...expected to moved out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this morning.

This typhoon will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and bring mostly cloudy and windy conditions with occasional rains and scattered thunderstorms across the Western Sections of Northern Luzon especially Ilocos Region. 
The threat of flash floods and landslides are likely in hazard-prone areas especially along river banks and mountain slopes of the affected areas especially during the occurrence of severe thunderstorms. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions.

Residents and visitors along Ryukyu Islands and Southern Japan should closely monitor the development of TY Halong (Jose).

About: 425 km southeast of Okinawa, Japan...or 1,080 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes
Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 160 kph near the center...Gustiness: 195 kph
24 hr. Rain Accumulation (near the center): 200 to 400 mm [Heavy to Extreme]
Minimum Central Pressure: 956 millibars (hPa)
Size (in diameter): 890 km (Medium)
Area of Damaging Winds (95 kph or more): 160 kilometers from the center
Past Movement: North-Northeast @ 13 kph
Forecast Movement: North @ 13 kph
Towards: Southern Japan


2-DAY FORECAST OUTLOOK*

TY Halong (Jose) is expected to move northward during the next 48 hours. On the forecast track, Halong (Jose) will just be moving across the open waters of the Northwest Pacific Ocean, just west of the Ryukyus...approaching the Southern Coast of Honshu, Japan on Saturday early morning.

Halong (Jose) is forecast to maintain its strength for the next 24 hours while passing over sea west of the Ryukyus...and will start to weaken through 48 hours while moving closer to Southern Japan. Advance Intensity Forecast (AIF) shows its 10-minute maximum sustained winds decreasing to 150 kph by early Saturday morning.

The following is the 3-day forecast outlook summary for this system:

FRIDAY EARLY MORNING: Maintain its strength as it moves north towards Southern Honshu-Shikoku Area...about 260 km southeast of Amami Is., Ryukyus [2AM AUG 08: 26.9N 131.5E @ 160kph].
SATURDAY EARLY MORNING: Loses strength anew as it continues to move northward, approaching the coast of Southern Honshu...about 270 km south-southeast of Kagoshima, Japan [2AM AUG 09: 29.3N 131.5E @ 150kph].
SUNDAY EARLY MORNING: Weakens further as it makes landfall over Western Shikoku in Japan...turns north-northeast...about 110 km west-southwest of Kochi, Japan [2AM AUG 10: 33.2N 132.4E @ 130kph].
