KONG-REY (01W) BECOMES THE FIRST TYPHOON OF THE 2007
SEASON...CHANGED ITS COURSE, SPARING GUAM & SAIPAN
ON A DIRECT HIT.

+ FORECAST OUTLOOK: KONG-REY is expected to resume its NW'ly
track and shall pass about 85 km. to the NE of Saipan early
tomorrow morning, around 4 AM HK Time - moving across the
northernmost islands of the Marianas that includes Agrihan
the whole day tomorrow. The 24-hr to 4-day medium to long-
range forecast (Apr 03-06) shows the system turning north-
ward and recurving NE'ly and shall start weakening over
the open waters of the Western Pacific due to increasing
upper-level winds (wind shear) north of the Marianas
. 

+ EFFECTS: KONG-REY is an average-sized system with its
western outer bands currently affecting the Northern Ma-
rianas, bringing scattered rains & winds not in excess
of 60 km/hr. The inner (rain) bands are expected to reach
Saipan-Agrihan area early tomorrow morning. Typhoon con-
ditions can be expected over Saipan-Tinian Islands early
tomorrow morning (Tue Apr 3) & the rest of the northern-
most Mariana Islands including Agrihan by tomorrow after-
noon through the evening. Coastal Storm Surge flooding
of 4 to 5 feet above normal tide levels...along with
large and dangerous battering waves can be expected
near and to the north of KONG-REY's projected path
.

ZATION AS WELL AS ENHANCED CONVECTION OVER THE LOW LEVEL CIR-
CULATION CENTER (LLCC). TS KONG-REY CONTINUES TO TRACK ON
THE SOUTHWESTERN PERIPHERY OF A RIDGE LOCATED TO ITS NORTH-
EAST. THIS TRACK WILL CONTINUE THROUGH 48 HOURS, WHEN AN
APPROACHING MIDLATITUDE TROUGH CURRENTLY OVER EASTERN CHINA
WILL BREAK DOWN THE STEERING RIDGE AND CAUSE THE SYSTEM TO
SLOW AND THEN TURN POLEWARD..
