TROPICAL STORM KONG-REY (01W) NEWLY-FORMED SOUTHEAST OF THE
MARIANA ISLAND CHAIN...BECOMES THE FIRST WESTERN PACIFIC
TROPICAL CYCLONE OF 2007...HEADS FOR GUAM-TINIAN-SAIPAN
AREA.
+ FORECAST OUTLOOK: KONG-REY is expected to maintain its intensification process as it tracks WNW to NW'ly, becoming
a minimal Typhoon tomorrow morning (Mon Apr 2). The 3 to
5-day long-range forecast shows the system becoming a Cate-
gory 2 Typhoon (160 kph) passing between Guam and Saipan
Islands early Tuesday morning (April 3), then start recur-
ving towards the NE on Wednesday or Thursday morning
(April 4-5).
+ EFFECTS: KONG-REY is an average-sized system with its outer
bands already affecting Chuuk and nearby islands of Microne-
sia, bringing widespread rains & winds not in excess of 55
km/hr today. Based on its present course, its outer bands is
expected to reach Guam-Tinian-
tonight. Deteriorating typhoon conditions can be expected
over the Marianas beginning tomorrow afternoon or evening
(April 2) as the system intensifies further and moves closer
