TROPICAL DEPRESSION KONG-REY (NANDO) UPDATE NUMBER 012

KONG-REY (NANDO) has weakened into a Tropical Depression as it veered to the northeast...now heading towards Northern Kyushu...its rain circulation remains over Northern Taiwan.

This storm will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Hanging Habagat) - bringing mostly cloudy and breezy conditions with occasional slight to moderate to sometimes heavy rains or thunderstorms across the northern part of the South China Sea, Taiwan Strait and Southern Taiwan. The threat of flash floods and landslides are likely in hazard-prone areas especially along river banks and mountain slopes of the affected areas. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions.


Residents and visitors along Western and Southern Japan should closely monitor the development of Kong-Rey (Nando).

CURRENT STORM ANALYSIS

As of 5:00 pm today, the center of TD Kong-Rey (Nando) was located over the East China Sea...about 700 km north-northeast of Taipei, Taiwan or 515 km southwest of Sasebo, Japan...currently moving northeast with an increased forward speed of 30 km/hr towards Northern Kyushu, Japan.

Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min. avg) are at 55 km/hr near the center with higher gusts. Kong-Rey (Nando) remains an average-sized tropical cyclone with a diameter of 390 kilometers across. The 24-hour rainfall accumulation to the southwest of the center of Kong-Rey (Nando) is estimated to be heavy (100 mm).


2-DAY FORECAST OUTLOOK*

TD Kong-Rey (Nando) is expected to continue to move northeastward throughout the forecast period. On the forecast track, the core of Kong-Rey (Nando) will pass along the northern shores of Western Japan by Saturday morning and will be over the Sea of Japan by Saturday afternoon. By Sunday afternoon, Kong-rey will be over the Pacific Ocean just to the south of Hokkaido after traversing Northern Honshu (Japan).

TD Kong-Rey (Nando) could still re-intensify within the next 12 to 24 hours before losing strength through 48 hours...and will become an Extratropical (Mid-latitude) Cyclone on Saturday morning. Advance Intensity Forecast (AIF) shows Kong-Rey (Nando) reaching a 1-minute sustained winds of 65 km/hr on Saturday morning.

The following is the summary of the 2-day forecast outlook on this system:

SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Re-intensifies slightly while over the Sea of Japan, as it accelerates toward Northern Honshu...about 160 km northwest of Kyoto, Japan [5PM AUG 31: 36.3N 134.4E @ 65kph].
SUNDAY AFTERNOON: Over the Pacific Ocean just south of Hokkaido (Japan)...weakens into an area of low pressure...about 390 km east of Sapporo, Japan [5PM SEP 01: 42.9N 146.2E @ 45kph].

*Please be reminded that the Forecast Outlook changes every 6 hours, and the Day 2 and 3 Forecast Tracks have an average error of 100 and 250 km respectively...while the wind speed forecast error, averages 35 kph per day. Therefore, a turn to the left or right of its future track and changes in its wind speed must be anticipated from time to time.

DECAYING RAINBANDS - where Tropical Depression Conditions with light, moderate to strong winds (30-62 kph) will be expected. Affected Areas: Northern Taiwan and rest of East China Sea (click here to know more about Rainbands).
24HR TOTAL RAINFALL ACCUMULATION - from 5 up to 25 mm (slight to moderate rainfall) can be expected along areas affected by the outer & inner rainbands (see above)...with isolated amounts of 26 to 100 mm (moderate to heavy) along areas to the southwest of the center of Kong-Rey (Nando).
