WINDS OF 200 KM/HR...RECURVING NORTHEASTWARD TOWARDS IWO
JIMA ISLAND...NO LONGER A THREAT TO THE PHILIPPINES.

+ FORECAST OUTLOOK: YUTU is expected to accelerate towards
the NE this afternoon. The 1 to 2-day medium range forecast
(May 21-22) shows YUTU weakening & becoming Extratropical
as it passes close to Iwo Jima Island Monday evening, May
21.

OF A SUBTROPICAL STEERING RIDGE ANCHORED NORTHEAST OF
THE MARIANA ISLANDS. THE SYSTEM HAS CRESTED THE RIDGE
AXIS AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING MID-LATITUDE TROUGH CU-
RRENTLY EXTENDING ACROSS JAPAN AND INTO THE YELLOW SEA.
THE STORM WILL INCREASE FORWARD TRACK SPEED AS IT MOVES
POLEWARD OF THE RIDGE AXIS AND ENCOUNTERS STRONG MID-
LATITUDE WESTERLY FLOW TO THE NORTH. TY YUTU WILL BEGIN
EXTRATROPICAL TRANSITION AHEAD OF THE AFOREMENTIONED
TROUGH BETWEEN 36 AND 48 HRS AND BECOME A STRONG,
FULLY EXTRATROPICAL LOW BY 72 HRS.

TROPICAL STORM YUTU (02W) HAS TURNED TOWARDS THE NORTHWEST
AFTER PASSING OVER YAP ISLAND LAST NIGHT...WIND SPEED IS
NOW AT 85 KM/HR.

+ FORECAST OUTLOOK: YUTU is expected to continue moving NW'ly
& shall enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this
afternoon. This system shall reach typhoon strength early to-
morrow morning (Sat May 19) and starts turning more northerly
with forecast Category 2 intensity of 160 km/hr. The 3 to 5-day
long range forecast (May 21-23) shows YUTU recurving towards
the NE across the Eastern Philippine Sea passing to the west
of Iwo Jima Island. Based on this latest forecast run, this
storm will not affect any part of the Philippines

moving away from the Micronesian Islands of Palau, Yap, Ulithi
